Nailhead beads are pressed glass, faceted sequin-like embellishments that were sewn onto clothing to add subtle interest during the late 19th century. Queen Victoria started an international fashion for using them as subtle embellishments on mourning dresses which is why is why we find so many nailhead beads in black, gun-metal or darker glass colour ways. They continued to be used in fashion until the 1920s after which they lay dormant until their recent revival. Most of these were manufactured in Bohemia (Czech Republic) in the early 1900’s, although some come from other parts of Europe including France and Germany. They have a flat back so that they will lie close against the fabric and an irregularly domed top, sometimes faceted, which led to the term “nail head.”
Nailheads as used in the very popular book ‘Shaped Beadwork’ by Diane Fitzgerald, which we also stock, and they can add interest, texture and a touch of glamour to many beading projects. The Bead Cellar is one of the premier importers of nailheads into the UK and being vintage they are a rare find and have a limited supply. Whilst many are dark colours you will also find some gorgeous lustre finishes, and some soft matt colours too. Most are round in shape but we have also found some square, oval, marquis and other unusual shapes with sizes ranging from 3mm to 12 mm.
